This document describes the symptoms and causes of Ethernet-based ECU upgrade failures and provides step-by-step resolution procedures, including checking hardware connections, configuring a static IP address, verifying app permissions and OS updates, resetting power, and restarting the tablet. It also includes corrective actions by error code and instructions for requesting additional support.

ECU upgrades requiring Ethernet when using the following equipment
- VCI2 + ECI (wired Ethernet connection)
- VCI3 + 19-pin USB cable (Ethernet over USB)
- KDS 2.0 diagnostic device and Android tablet
Symptoms
- The ECU upgrade fails with an error code (XXXX‑XX‑XXXX)
- Find an error code ⧉
Causes
- Incorrect or missing static IP configuration on the tablet
- Outdated Android OS or Google Play system update
- Unstable VCI2/VCI3 power or an incomplete connection
- ECU or vehicle communication failure
Resolution
Step 1) Verify the equipment connections
Note:
Manually configured Ethernet settings may be reset during a system or OS update. After an update, verify the settings and reconfigure them if necessary.
Verify the correct connection required for an ECU upgrade over Ethernet:
-
VCI2 + ECI: OBD → ECI → VCI2 → tablet
Caution:
Ensure that all connectors are securely connected and that the cables are not bent or damaged.
-
VCI3 + 19-pin USB cable: OBD → VCI3 → 19-pin USB → tablet
Caution:
Ensure that all connectors are securely connected and that the cables are not bent or damaged.
Step 2) Verify the static/fixed IP settings on the tablet
- Tap the Recent apps button (□) on the navigation bar.
- Open Android Settings and navigate to one of the following paths:
- Option A: Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Option B: Settings → Network & internet → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Configure the static IP settings as follows, and then tap [Save]:
- IP address: 10.0.128.0
- Netmask: 255.0.0.0
- DNS address: 8.8.8.8
- Default gateway: 10.0.128.0
- Proxy: None
Step 3) Verify app permissions and Android OS & Google Play system updates
A. App permissions – GITMCommManagerService
When performing an ECU upgrade, KDS 2.0 prompts for any missing app permissions.
Always select [OK] or [Allow].
How to manually allow app permissions for GITMCommManagerService:

B. Android OS & Google Play system updates
- Open Settings on the tablet.
- Go to About tablet → Software information.
- Select Google Play system update.
- Ensure that the tablet is fully up to date (minimum: Android OS 13 + Google Play system update dated 2024 or later).
Step 4) If the ECU upgrade continues to fail after completing Steps 1–3
Warning: Disconnect the vehicle battery only in a safe working environment.
- Disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Wait at least 5 minutes for all ECUs to power off completely.
- Reconnect the battery and retry the ECU upgrade 2–3 times.
Step 5) Restart the tablet if the symptom persists
- Power off the tablet completely.
- Wait approximately 10 seconds.
- Power it on again and retry the upgrade.
