This article explains how to resolve the "Your HSM certificate has expired" or "The certificate was not received properly" error message when attempting an ECU Upgrade on KDS 2.0, especially after a tablet replacement.

Symptoms
After replacing the diagnostic tablet and installing KDS 2.0, the following warning pop-up appears when attempting to use the ECU Upgrade function:
"Your HSM certificate has expired. Click the Confirm button to try logging in again."
(or)
"The certificate was not received properly. Please log in again."
Cause
This issue occurs because the VCI device (VCI II(2) or VCI III(3)) does not have a valid security certificate. The required certificate must be properly injected from the server to the VCI device during user login.
How to Resolve
- Log out of KDS 2.0 and completely terminate the application.
- Reboot the tablet PC.
- Run KDS 2.0 again.
(Ensure the VCI is NOT plugged into the vehicle at this point.) - Activate Log Collection — just in case this workaround fails.
- Log in with your credentials and wait for 2 to 3 minutes for background certification synchronization.
- Wire up the tablet PC and the VCI device using the dedicated cable included in the product package.
See Cable Requirements below. - Then plug the VCI device into the vehicle OBD port.
- Wait for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Run FCS1 with some ECUs to verify communication.
- Try ECU upgrade.
If it keeps failing with the same error message, please submit the error log.
