This article provides troubleshooting procedures for Ethernet-required ECU Upgrade failures when using KDS 2.0 diagnostic devices. It covers possible causes, including incorrect tablet IP configuration, outdated software, and unstable connections. Corrective actions include checking the hardware, configuring IP settings, granting app permissions, updating the operating system, performing power resets, and contacting technical support if the issue persists.

Ethernet-required ECU Upgrade workflow using:
- VCI2 + ECI (wired Ethernet connection)
- VCI3 + 9-pin USB cable (Ethernet over USB)
- KDS 2.0 diagnostic device and Android tablet
Symptom
- ECU Upgrade fails and displays an error code (XXXX-XX-XXXX)
- Find the error code ⧉
Cause
- Incorrect or missing fixed IP configuration on the tablet
- Outdated Android OS or Google Play system update
- Unstable VCI2/VCI3 power supply or incomplete connection
- Temporary ECU or vehicle-side communication Stall requiring a power reset
Resolution
Step 1) Verify the Ethernet hardware connection
Note:
System or OS updates may reset manually configured Ethernet settings. After an update, verify the settings and reconfigure them if necessary.
Confirm the connection method required for Ethernet upgrades:
-
VCI2 + ECI: OBD → ECI → VCI2 → Tablet
IMPORTANT:
Make sure all connectors are fully seated and that the cables are not bent or damaged.
-
VCI3 + 9-pin USB cable: OBD → VCI3 → 9-pin USB → Tablet
IMPORTANT:
Make sure all connectors are fully seated and that the cables are not bent or damaged.
Step 2) Verify the static/fixed IP setting in the tablet settings
- Tap the Recent apps button (□) on the Navigation bar.
- Open the Android settings and navigate to:
- Variant A: Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Variant B: Settings → Network & Internet → Ethernet → Configure Ethernet device
- Enter the following static IP settings, and then tap [Save]:
- IP address: 10.0.128.0
- Netmask: 255.0.0.0
- DNS address: 8.8.8.8
- Default gateway: 10.0.128.0
- Proxy: None
Step 3) Confirm app permissions and Android OS and Google Play system updates
A. App permission – GITMCommManagerService
When you perform an ECU Upgrade, KDS 2.0 prompts you to grant any required app permissions that are missing.
Make sure to tap [OK] or [Allow].

B. Android OS and Google Play system update
- Open Settings on the tablet.
- Go to About tablet → Software information.
- Select Google Play system update.
- Make sure the tablet is fully updated. The minimum requirements are Android OS 13 and Google Play system update 2024 or later.
Step 4) If the ECU Upgrade still fails after completing Steps 1–3
Warning: Disconnect the vehicle battery only under safe working conditions and in accordance with the applicable service procedures.
- Disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Wait at least 5 Minutes for ALL ECUs to power down completely.
- Reconnect the battery, and then retry the ECU Upgrade process 2–3 times.
Step 5) If the symptom persists, restart the tablet
- Turn off the tablet completely.
- Wait approximately 10 Seconds.
- Turn on the tablet, and then attempt the upgrade again.
